You’re probably aware, due to your keen, beautiful eyes, that we have pulled down last weeks GIF and put up another. This one, although not as disturbing as the Finger Licking Jam guy with Oranges on His Head, still makes me feel slightly uneasy. Quite possibly because it is an animation of a three-legged person jumping on the spot while their head splits in two. Yeah, that’s probably it.

It is oddly beautiful though, and a perfect example of where GIF’s have come since the 90s. The artist (yes, a GIF artist) is Francoise Gamma; a guy with a knack for making the freaky and bizarre seem mesmerizing and, well, freaky and bizarre. For some reason they remind me of Blade Runner; quite sci-fi and androgynous.

I will post a few here, but to save your browsers from crashing, I recommend going to his website to check out the rest. There is also Videogramo, a single page site that is an artwork in itself. Great stuff.

Now you know you’ve done everything right when a user of your product asks her mum “Can we come back tomorrow?” This is especially so when the product is an MRI machine.

David Kelley, the founder of the legendary design firm IDEO, gives a great talk about creative confidence and the moments when some of us lose this confidence, somethimes forever.

“That opting out [of creativity] that happens in childhood … moves in and becomes more ingrained by the time you get to adult life.” We must all help people to realise that creativity is an innate talent to be fostered and nurtured and not to shy away from. Kelley tells us he believe that when people gain this confidence they work on what is important in their lives and make better decisions. And he asks us not to divide the world into creatives and non-creatives.

I’m down with this.

It has become almost too easy to recreate a letterpress with a couple of vectors and a grunge brush in photoshop. Or even an app on the ipad. But nothing beats the real thing. Dodge recently had a campaign that went for the authentic rather than a photoshop recreation, and it looks pretty amazing. Heavy, bold, slabbed and metal. Like the Dodge Ram itself.

I found this amazing work over on another blog, Dave Tucker, who does a good job of explaining the project, so I’ll let him do it;

“Over the summer Dodge Ram’s creative team decided to do a series of commercials, web design and print advertisements that would embelish the rough and gritty manliness of Dodge Trucks. The team decided on a rugged Old West theme which would tie in the grit, strength and danger of the time with the masculinity of their trucks. To tie the era with raw machine power Dodge decided to focus on the workhorse machine of the era, letter press and wood type. The commercial was shot at the International Printing Museum and ties an era with no automobiles seamlessly to the present with close shots of the machines at work, mimicking a modern day close up of pistons and belts in an under the hood car commercial.”

The finished project is up and running over at Dodge’s site and it looks beautiful.

But, the fun part is the behind the scenes. The nitty gritty. The press. So, watch the video and check out some of the photo’s from the making of. What a great project.

But, there is something wrong with these promo images and video. Anyone care to guess what it is? Hmmmm.

They have an artist-in-residence program, which this illuminated photographic installation is a part of. The portraits are of people who have worked on or associated with the old brewery back in the day. I wonder what they’d think of the site now?

So great! Some spectacular examples exist out there in the world, and I’m sure you have your favourites. Mine? Well, Hitchcock had Saul Bass by his side to create some of the most memorable and beautiful titles I have ever seen, so my number one is North by North West. I stumbled upon a little video on title design which shows some great examples, and speaks to some interesting people. Have a watch (it even features some Saul Bass). If you can, link us your favourites, if I find enough, I’ll do a post of the top 20 movie titles of all time. (I’m lazy, I need your help).

One thing I recently came across thanks to good.is is the Trashcam Project which was started in March of this year. A group of workers teamed up with a local creative agency in Hamburg, Germany. Now they’re documenting the city they help keep clean by turning dumpsters into gigantic pinhole cameras.

It’s a beautiful idea and I love some of the comments on their Flickr stream, see below.

“Recently I visited Madrid and I noticed that the men who work for the garbage collection are real geniuses. You can tell it by the way they work and by their faces while doing it.”

This is binman Hans-Peter Strahl taking a picture of the church in Hamburg Altenwerder with his pinhole dumpster. Binmen start their tour very early, this was at seven in the morning and he was already up and working a few hours. so it comes in handy that taking trashcam pictures is mostly waiting. Shot by Mirko Derpmann with a Fuji gw690 on fuji velvia.

The City Hall in Hamburg photographed with a garbage container by
garbageman Michael Pfohlmann, Christoph Blaschke and Mirko Derpmann. Shot on a 106×80 cm sheet of ilford multigrade with sin minutes exposure time.

To accompany our regular tGIF this week, I thought I would do a post about the artist who created it, Dain Fagerholm. Not only are his illustrations beautiful, that faux-3D oscillating effect (or whatever it’s called) is spectacular. The GIF really is evolving, and I like where Dain is taking it. I think the reason I like these illustrations so much is that they remind me of my favourite artist, Yoshitomo Nara. I am sorry if I killed your browser with all these GIFs…

Brooklyn-based collage artist Mac Premo was preparing to move from his longtime studio to a much smaller one. Instead of simply tossing most things in the bin, he decided to catalog each item and the memories associated with them.

The result was The Dumpster Project.

“I think that we define ourselves through the things that we collect and the things that we keep,” Premo says in a video about the project. “I think we imbue meaning into objects and I think subsequently those objects become a record of who you are.”

Premo: “Listen, this is what baseball is about: run it out, throw hard, slide with abandon, work hard and long and slow if necessary, always think, never think, guffaw like a hick but quantify like a philosopher, spit, never dance like some end-zone shit head, make eye contact, don’t back down but oh christ-never ever be a meathead, embrace dirt and be honest. Above all, run it out.”

Premo: “I don’t know what you are talking about. I don’t see anything.”

Premo: “I remember this watch from when I was about 5. For two years I waited for that guy to stop pump-faking and finally pass the damn ball. By the time I was seven, it became clear that he was never going to commit.”
