Snapparazzi: Oxford Street Nostalgia

Last week we received a lovely little email with a request. Here it is, in full.

Good Afternoon,
I know this is out of the blue. My grandparents started a clothing business in the 1920′s from rooms on the second floor of 94 Oxford Street. After returning from the Air Force and WWII in 1946 my Father continued the business till the early 1970′s. The reason for my email is, after some 25 years in South Australia my Father and I are taking a trip back to NSW and will be in Sydney Thursday 16th August. I am hoping you may be able to help me fulfill the wish we both hold to once again stand in the rooms that were so much part of our family’s lives and to look from the windows on to Oxford Street. We would only take a couple of minutes and would make an effort not disrupt your business.

Of course we welcomed them into our studio with much interest and enthusiasm. Sadly, I only got to snap one photograph (on my iPhone, whilst moving, with the sun blaring through the window). It isn’t often you hear about Oxford Street of old (and a time when police directed traffic at Taylor Square), so we understandably loved listening to tales of how things used to be.

The photo – although horribly taken – feels quite vintagey, so it is slightly appropriate.
