From Saigon is penned by Lys Bui, an illustrator and designer currently chasing cats in New York and a good friend of mine. She captures Saigon’s ‘architectural, historic and nostalgic treasures’, or otherwise, one illustrator’s attempt to preserve a part of her history that is becoming ‘extinct’.
The architecture of Saigon are interactions of European and Eastern cultures — that between French colonial architecture and the wooden framework and intricate pattern carvings of traditional Vietnamese architecture. Many have been and will be demolished by the city’s spontaneous urban planning, replaced with reflective high-rises lacking of distinction. It’s a shame to say the least.
